Atemoya is a tropical fruit with an irregular shape and leathery, scaly green skin. The creamy-white flesh tastes resembles a pina colada. Try cherimoya in smoothies, milkshakes, and cocktails, or add slices to fruit salads and salsas.

Avocados have a pebbly skin that turns from dark green to near black when ripe. Cut lengthwise, twist to separate the halves, and scoop out the creamy, pale green flesh for guacamole (lemon juice will keep the flesh from discolouring) and smoothies, or add sliced avocado to salad or a BLT sandwich.

Often used as a meat alternative across the world, breadfuit is a large, nutritious, versatile fruit that can be prepared for almost any dish. Look out for a softer, yellow or yellow brown skin when picking out a ripe fruit. Once cooked the flavour is similar to that of a potato, and smells similar to a loaf of bread.

Transform your plant-based cooking with the unique texture of jackfruit. When cooked, its fibrous flesh shreds easily, making it an excellent substitute for pulled meat. It readily absorbs the flavour of whatever it's cooked with, from smoky barbecue sauce for sandwiches to spicy marinades for tacos.

Green kiwis are egg-shaped with fuzzy brown skin. Inside, their green flesh is speckled with tiny black edible seeds and their flavour is sweet and sometimes tart. You can peel and slice your kiwi or just cut it in half and scoop out the flesh. They retain their bright green colour even when exposed to air so kiwi is a good choice for fruit salad and fresh fruit tarts.

Mangoes have a firm, fibrous orange flesh and sweet flavour. Their skin is typically greenish-yellow with a red blush covering most of it, but colour isn’t a reliable way of way of testing for ripeness. Instead, squeeze the mango gently. If it’s ripe it will give slightly. Enjoy mango on its own, in fruit salad, or chutney.
